ROTHESAY Golf Club has enjoyed a week to remember, with the annual Club Championships producing some outstanding golf, dramatic finishes and a remarkable milestone for one of the club’s most successful players.
Finals day, held on July 26, saw competitors battle it out across a number of prestigious competitions, with the highlight being a historic victory in the Club Championship.
George Reynolds claimed his 11th Club Championship title after defeating Caleb Bolton 1 up in a closely fought final. At the age of 63, and following a hip replacement, George’s achievement was made all the more impressive as he became the oldest winner of the club’s championship.
However, the route to the final was far from straightforward. George overcame John McBride in the semi-final, while Caleb produced a memorable performance to defeat his father, Graham Bolton, at the 20th hole in their semi-final encounter.
The final itself was a tense affair. Caleb looked to have the momentum after producing a superb birdie at the 18th, striking a four iron through the wind to within three feet of the pin. George responded brilliantly, getting up and down, although he lost the hole. The afternoon continued in a nip-and-tuck fashion, with George holding a one-hole advantage on the 17th and a chance to close out the match, only to see the opportunity disappear after a three-putt left the pair all square.
However, young Caleb could not capitalise on the final hole, and George secured the championship with a composed bogey four. Both finalists were congratulated for their performances, with George adding another chapter to his impressive Rothesay Golf Club record, while Caleb’s display showed that further success is surely ahead.
The Ladies Championship was won by Elizabeth McMillan, who defeated Anne Buist 4&3, while Catherine Rae lifted the Ladies Handicap Championship after a 6&5 victory over Karen McMillan.
The Atlantic Tankard final saw Kevin Queen edge out Jonah Templeton in another close contest, winning 1 up. Robert Lowrie claimed the Sunnindale Bowl with a convincing 7&6 victory over John McArthur.
The club’s recent competitions also saw another outstanding achievement from the Bolton family. Graham Bolton secured his 16th Bennie Trophy, posting impressive rounds of 71 and 68 for a total of 139. His score was two shots clear of Jack Reynolds, who finished on 141, with Stephen Reynolds and John Shaw tied on 142.
It has truly been a remarkable week for the old firm of Rothesay Golf. George Reynolds’ record-breaking championship success, combined with Graham Bolton’s latest Bennie Trophy triumph, highlights the continued quality and longevity of the club’s experienced players.
