Storm Boelo blows Morton clash with Ayr off course

GREENOCK Morton’s clash with Ayr United fell victim to Storm Boelo on Saturday as torrential rain left the Cappielow pitch waterlogged and unplayable.

Despite efforts to clear standing water from the playing surface, the Championship encounter was called off as the storm brought heavy rain and powerful winds to the west of Scotland.

Groundstaff worked in difficult conditions to remove water from the pitch, with brushes and leaf blowers brought into action in an attempt to get the surface ready for play.

However, persistent rainfall left areas around the touchlines saturated, with pools of water collecting on the grass.

The match officials inspected the playing surface as efforts continued to determine whether the fixture could safely go ahead.

The postponement was another example of the disruption caused by Storm Boelo, which battered Inverclyde, Cowal and other parts of western Scotland throughout the weekend.

The severe weather caused widespread travel disruption, power cuts and damage to coastal infrastructure, with sporting fixtures also affected.

For Morton and Ayr United, attention will now turn to arranging a new date for the Championship encounter, with details of the rearranged fixture still to
be confirmed.
