STRACHUR-DUNOON successfully retained the Colin Cameron Memorial Quaich with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Uddingston at Strachurmore on Saturday, claiming the trophy for the fourth time.
Played in scorching summer conditions, the annual memorial fixture proved to be another fitting tribute to the late Colin Cameron, with a large crowd of family, friends and supporters gathering to remember one of Cowal’s most respected figures.
The home side made a bright start and controlled much of the opening half, creating a number of promising opportunities but struggling to find a breakthrough. Their persistence was finally rewarded just after the half-hour mark when Sandy Paterson threaded a pass through to Angus Campbell, who showed excellent composure to squeeze his effort in off the post from a tight angle to give Strachur-Dunoon a deserved lead.
The Blues continued to dictate possession after the restart but found Uddingston difficult to break down. The visiting goalkeeper, Jamie Paterson, produced a string of impressive saves to frustrate the hosts—much to the frustration of his brother Sandy, who was lining up for Strachur-Dunoon.
Eventually, the pressure told when the home side won a penalty after a foul inside the area. Campbell confidently stepped up to convert from the spot, doubling both his tally and Strachur-Dunoon’s advantage.
With the game seemingly under control, the hosts eased off in the closing stages, allowing Uddingston to build momentum. The visitors were awarded a penalty with 10 minutes remaining after referee Robert Baxter judged that Ewan MacDonald had committed an infringement inside the box. Lee Thompson calmly converted the spot-kick to reduce the deficit and set up a tense finale.
However, Strachur-Dunoon defended resolutely during the closing minutes to secure a deserved 2-1 victory and retain the Colin Cameron Memorial Quaich after another competitive and entertaining contest.
Following the final whistle, captain Cammy Middleton was presented with the Quaich by members of Colin Cameron’s family, marking the club’s fourth victory in the competition.
Kyle MacMartin earned the Man of the Match award after an outstanding defensive performance that helped the home side withstand Uddingston’s late pressure.
Strachur-Dunoon extended their thanks to Uddingston for making the journey and contributing to another memorable occasion, while also recognising the efforts of the club’s volunteers, whose hard work ensured the fixture was a great success with Strachurmore presented in immaculate condition.
The club also expressed its gratitude to Colin Cameron’s family and friends, along with the excellent home support, whose presence helped make the day a fitting celebration of the life and legacy of a great.
