Superb scoring lights up Port Bannatyne golf event
Stephen Dunn, Handicap trophy winner

PORT Bannatyne Golf Club welcomed almost 60 golfers on Sunday, May 24, for the Argyll and Bute Spring Meeting, with competitors enjoying excellent conditions and some outstanding scoring throughout the day.

Players travelled from clubs across the region to take part in the popular event, with many praising the superb condition of the course. Greenkeepers Duncan and Graham were credited for their hard work in preparation, with the quality of play reflecting their efforts.

Scoring started strongly from the earliest groups, with cards beginning to return from around 10.30am. It quickly became clear that low rounds would be needed to challenge for the prizes.

Rothesay Golf Club’s Donnie McDermid laid down an early marker in the scratch competition with an impressive round of 67 for a nett 63. However, the strong scoring continued throughout the day as later starters pushed hard for the leading positions.

Donald Standaloft and John McBride both threatened McDermid’s lead with excellent rounds of 68 and 69 respectively, while Hector Whitelaw rolled back the years by beating his age with a superb nett 63.

The standout performance of the day came from Port Bannatyne’s own Stephen Dunn, who produced a remarkable nett 57 to secure the handicap title and lift the trophy. Dunn, who has only recently returned to regular golf, is now expected to see a significant cut to his handicap following his exceptional score.

Off the course, competitors were well looked after in the clubhouse by Roddie and Hazel, while the event itself was organised expertly by Graham Bolton and his son Caleb, with the club extending its thanks for their efforts.

Port Bannatyne Golf Club also thanked everyone who travelled to take part in what was widely regarded as a successful and enjoyable day doon the water.
