PLANS for a heritage scheme to showcase the history of Tarbert over the next five years have been revealed in a report.
A project with a total value of £3.2 million is in place, funded by Historic Environment Scotland, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and Argyll and Bute Council.
The repair and re-use of historic buildings, and shopfront improvement grants, form part of the plans for the project, along with a programme of community heritage activities between 2026 and 2031.
The details feature in a report to go before the council’s environment, development and infrastructure committee at its meeting on Friday, October 9.
Executive director Kirsty Flanagan said: “Tarbert Heritage Scheme is a five-year, heritage-led regeneration programme, funded by, Historic Environment Scotland (£999,997), National Lottery Heritage Fund (£850,000) and Argyll and Bute Council (£650,000), with a total project value of £3.2 million.
“The scheme aims to support the regeneration of Tarbert village centre by investing in its historic built environment, improving the quality and appearance of key buildings.
“The main elements of the programme include the repair and reuse of historic buildings, comprehensive repairs to priority tenement properties, shopfront improvement grants, smaller building repair projects with a focus on local fishing heritage, as well as the ambition to bring vacant homes and commercial spaces back into productive use.
“The scheme also includes a programme of community heritage activities, skills training and educational initiatives, celebrating Tarbert’s maritime heritage while developing traditional building skills, supporting local contractors, and creating opportunities for young people.
“In addition, the programme will help improve the climate resilience of historic buildings and strengthen community pride, wellbeing and sense of place through events, workshops and engagement activities delivered in partnership with local organisations and stakeholders.
“The programme benefits from dedicated project officer resource, as well as an architect-led design team, which has been commissioned for the project duration.”
