Toward Seasports Club prepares for annual regatta

MEMBERS of Toward Seasports Club experienced challenging and ever-changing conditions during last week’s Cumbrae 3 race, with competitors facing everything from near-calm conditions at the start to gusts of 17 knots later in the contest.
The south-westerly wind left sailors wondering what lay ahead as the fleet gathered for the start. At the five-minute warning horn there was virtually no wind, with boats drifting slowly towards the line. As the starting signal sounded, Toots, Sgaden, Wild Goose and Saorsa were all well positioned on the line, closely followed by Parallel Motion, Still Game, Topper and Whiskey Please.
The opening stages were a test of patience, with competitors drifting across the start line. Boats that ventured further offshore managed to find a light breeze, while those remaining closer to the shoreline struggled to gain momentum.
Conditions then changed dramatically as the wind steadily increased, eventually reaching gusts of around 17 knots and transforming the race into a much faster and more tactical contest.
Whiskey Please was first around the opening mark, followed by Saorsa, Parallel Motion, Still Game, Wild Goose, Topper, Sgaden and Toots.
Saorsa moved into the lead at the next mark, while further back Still Game began to make significant progress, overtaking both Parallel Motion and Whiskey Please as the race developed. As the breeze strengthened, several crews in the latter half of the fleet opted to reef their jibs to maintain control, while Sgaden was forced to retire from the race.
After handicaps were applied, Wild Goose, skippered by G. Judd, emerged as the overall winner. Still Game, helmed by K. McDonald, claimed second place, while A. Finlay’s Saorsa completed the podium in third.
In the smaller class results, Topper, sailed by T. McCrossan, took first place ahead of F. McKay’s Whiskey Please.

Attention now turns to one of the highlights of the club calendar, the 55th Annual Regatta, which takes place this weekend.
Festivities begin with a social barbecue on Friday evening before racing gets under way on Saturday. This year’s regatta has been condensed into a one-day event, allowing members and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy the renowned Fife Regatta on Sunday as the fleet makes its way into Rothesay.
With strong entries expected and plenty of excitement on and off the water, Toward Seasports Club is looking forward to another memorable regatta weekend.
