Volunteers Transform Historic Balnakailly Bunker as Community Art Project Takes Shape

VOLUNTEERS have been making remarkable progress on an ambitious project to transform the historic Balnakailly Bunker on the circuit into a unique community art attraction.

The initiative, led by Bute Community Forest, has already seen the former military bunker undergo a dramatic makeover thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers who have braved wet weather, challenging conditions and clouds of midges to breathe new life into the site.

Last week, volunteers spent a day clearing out the bunker and applying primer to the walls and ceiling, creating a striking transformation in just a few hours.

The task was far from easy, with participants carrying paint, tools and materials to and from the remote location while working in damp conditions. However, organisers praised the team’s determination and enthusiasm.

Work continued this week despite torrential rain, with volunteers returning to apply a second coat of primer in the entrance room and begin marking out the background for a large mural planned for one of the interior spaces.

The mural has been designed by Port Bannatyne artist Stephen Doak and will become a key feature of the completed project. Volunteers also measured openings within the bunker where Perspex covers are planned as part of the redevelopment.

Bute Community Forest thanked everyone who has contributed their time and energy to the project so far, describing the volunteer effort as outstanding.

The organisation is now inviting artists from across the island and beyond to get involved in painting the murals. Both amateur and professional artists are welcome to take part as the project moves into its next creative phase.

The work has been made possible through funding from Argyll and Bute Third Sector Interface, which Bute Community Forest has thanked for its support.

The Balnakailly Bunker project forms part of wider efforts to enhance visitor experiences on the Balnakailly Circuit while celebrating the area’s history and creating new opportunities for community participation and creativity.
