A REMARKABLE historic Cowal property has just come on to the market, and is sure to see a lot of interest.
The Pier House at Tighnabruaich is being marketed by Dunoon estate agents Waterside Property.
The building at the pierhead was built in 1857 and refurbished, along with the pier, in 1825. The pier house was extended in 1905 to include a tea- room, and a further extension was added around 1930.
There are many conflicting accounts of the pier’s early history, but there seems to be consensus that the pier house was originally built, along with the pier, by the Tighnabruaich Estate, replacing an earlier structure.
The pier, and the pier house, were sold to pier master George Olding in 1950, and in 1965 the pier became the responsibility of the local authority and the pier house was sold to a private owner.
Now, the pier house if on the market again.
The pier still receives PS Waverley regularly during her summer season, and is now looked after by a pier association.
The four-bedroom house is described by the estate agent as; “Unique and brimming with character.”
The description goes on: “Slightly quirky, but totally charismatic, it provides the chance to live the lifestyle that others can only dream of. As its name suggests, the ‘upside down’ house sits directly above the village pier with the large private balcony offering outstanding, panoramic, views of the Kyles of Bute, a vista shared by most of the rooms in the house.”
The house is on the market for offers over £325,000.
