Oakbank set to reopen this summer

ONE OF Scotland’s newest community- owned pubs is preparing to open its doors later this summer, following an ambitious revitalisation project driven by local volunteers.

The Oakbank Inn, located in Sandbank, is one of a growing number of pubs across Scotland now in community hands. The Oakbank Community Inn Sandbank (OCIS) group took ownership after securing more than £147,000 from the Scottish Land Fund in late 2024. Since then, volunteers have been working tirelessly to bring the 160-year-old venue back to life.

Over 200 supporters, including some from as far afield as the USA, have bought shares in the project. “Most of our shareholders are from Sandbank and nearby Dunoon,” said committee member Sue McKillop, “but the backing from across Scotland and beyond has been incredible.”

Previously one of three beer’ events, including a lively quiz night, have already helped breathe new life into the space. More events are lined up, such as a paranormal evening on Saturday, June 21, a US-themed Independence Day celebration on July 4, and another quiz night on Friday, July 18.

“There’s a real buzz again,” added Sue. “We’re even exploring a permanent exhibition to honour the American naval presence in Sandbank from 1961 to 1991 and are asking locals to share memories or memorabilia.”

To support the transition, the committee has appointed Dawn Petherick, a local businesswoman and life coach, as part-time development officer.

“We’re not quite there yet,” Sue added, “but the Oakbank’s revival is well underway – and we can’t wait to welcome the community through its doors again soon.”
