Housing plan for 29 homes submitted for Islay site

A PROPOSAL for 29 new houses to be built on Islay has been lodged with council officers.

Limestrasse, with West Highland Housing Association, is seeking planning permission in principle for a site southwest of Lochgorm House in Bruichladdich.

The plans include 22 affordable homes by the housing association (WHHA) and seven shorefront homes by Limestrasse. The properties would be a mix of one, two, three and five-bedroom properties.

Argyll and Bute Council planning officials are expected to rule on the application by early August, with the public now able to view the plans and submit feedback.

A supporting statement said: “[The proposal] is to build 22 affordable houses and seven shorefront properties for sale.

“All shall be a maximum height of two-storey properties with pitched roofs. The affordable properties are likely to be a mix of four one-bed properties (four flats in a block), eight two-bed dwellings (four flats in a block), four two-bed semi-detached houses [and] six three-bed semi-detached dwellings.

“It is likely the affordable properties shall be built in two phases. An indicative site layout plan is included and has been successfully reviewed with WHHA. It meets their intended requirements at this time.

“There is ample space onsite for a dedicated children’s play areas in both phases, visitor and shared parking, and some in curtilage parking. A section of informal open space has been retained in the southwest section of the site that is suitable habitat for some species of birds found on Islay.”

The statement added: “The existing field gate [is] to be made up to a vehicular junction onto the A847 providing access via a secondary (adopted) road to all 22 affordable properties and two of the shorefront dwellings.

“The remaining five shorefront properties [are] to share three private vehicular accesses from the A847, as is common along the A847.

“A bus layby shall be accommodated close to the burn, with a two-metre wide public footpath running to the field side of the eastern stone boundary wall (if desirable).”
