More than 100 new homes could be built in a well-known part of Port Glasgow after initial plans took a significant step forward last week.
Inverclyde Council’s bid for planning permission in principle for the development at Clune Park was granted, subject to conditions, at Wednesday’s planning board.
The decision paves the way for the potential construction of 135 units – a combination of flats and houses – as well as associated roads and infrastructure at the site.
Council leader Stephen McCabe said: “This is an important step in the council’s regeneration of Clune Park.
“We need new houses in Inverclyde and Clune Park is in an ideal location.
“This has been a long time coming. Although the approval is only for planning in principle, it’s essential to move forward and attract housing developers to see the potential in Clune Park.
“Phase one of the masterplan is complete and phase two is well underway.
“I look forward to seeing the transformation of Clune Park as it continues to develop.”
Clune Park is currently undergoing a major redevelopment after decades of decline.
The local authority has been acquiring properties there for a number of years and now owns more than half of the estate.
The first phase, which began in April last year, is now complete with the former school, church and resource centre south of Robert Street all demolished and cleared.
The second phase to knock down a number of unsafe residential buildings between Robert Street and Glasgow Road is under way.
The plans agreed last week include a mixture of one and two-bedroom flats as well as two, three and four-bedroom homes.
In line with local planning priorities, 25 per cent of the homes would be affordable housing.
The application was accompanied by a masterplan for Clune Park which includes layouts showing how the site could be developed.
