DUNOON ARGYLL Bowling Club was the place to be on Saturday as members and visitors enjoyed dry conditions for the club’s annual Ladies Day tournament.
A superb entry of 36 ladies from clubs across Cowal took to a green that was in excellent condition, running particularly well after being freshly cut. The quality of the surface helped produce a consistently high standard of bowling throughout the day.
The competition began with four games of triples played on a random draw basis, with every team looking to accumulate enough points to secure one of the coveted semi-final places. After a total of 24 closely contested games, the four highest scoring teams progressed to the knock out stages.
Following two competitive semi-finals and an entertaining final, the title was claimed by Norah McCluskey (Upper Cowal BC), Jane Campbell (Dunoon Argyll BC) and Lesley Collings (Bogleha’ BC), who combined impressively to lift this year’s trophy.
Finishing as runners-up were Eileen Stokes (Dunoon Argyll BC), Maureen Miller (Dunoon Argyll BC) and Audrey Newlands (Bogleha’ BC). Those edged out at the semi-final stage were Helen Campbell (Bogleha’ BC), Christine McEwan (Dunoon Argyll BC) and Louise Cannon (Dunoon Argyll BC) who lost by only one shot and Roseanne McTaggart (Upper Cowal BC), Charlotte Lorimer (Kirn and Hunter’s Quay BC) and Anne Margaret Houston (Dunoon Argyll BC) who were even closer but were eliminated after an extra end.
Accepting the trophy on behalf of the winning team, Lesley Collings congratulated Dunoon Argyll Bowling Club on another superbly organised tournament and paid tribute to the club’s gentlemen members for keeping the players and spectators fed and refreshed throughout the day.
Bringing proceedings to a close, club president Jim Campbell thanked Scott Tyre of John Tyre & Sons for sponsoring the event, noting that such valued support helps ensure the popular competition continues to thrive. He also thanked Terry Walker for presenting the prizes on behalf of the sponsor.
Mr. Campbell also echoed the appreciation shown to the club’s gentlemen members for providing afternoon refreshment and warm hospitality throughout the day. He concluded by congratulating the winners, thanking all competitors for their support, acknowledged those who donated raffle prizes and wished everyone the very best for the relatively short remainder of the outdoor bowling season
