THE GENTS Cowal Championships week started on Sunday, June 28, as teams locked horns for the Esson Cup at Kirn & Hunter’s Quay Bowling Club.
With each team entering two fours and the participants playing each other on a round-robin basis, the winners, who were plus 27 shots, were Upper Cowal Bowling Club.
The Cowal Championships proper then started the following Wednesday and finished again at Kirn and Hunter’s Quay Bowling Club on Saturday, July 4. Five of the six Cowal clubs entered teams in the singles, juvenile singles, pairs and fours competitions. The weather throughout the week was rather wet but despite that there was a particularly high standard of bowls with some very close games brining out the best in participants.

Junior Singles: winner, – Scott Gillan (Kirn & HQ BC); runner-up, – Alexander Buchanan (Kirn & HQ BC).
Pairs: winner, – Eddie Wallace & Stevie Scott (Bogleha’ BC); runner-up, – Robert Menzies Snr & Steven Girvan (Dunoon Argyll BC).
Fours, – winner, – Davy Cameron, Euan Hunter, Ian Goffin & Daniel Baker (Kirn & HQ BC); runner-up, – Stuart Strachan, Davy Gillan, Chris Boyd & Cammy Boyd.
In accepting the Cowal Singles Trophy, Chris Dickson thanked all those who hosted matches throughout the week and in particular Kirn & Hunter’s Quay Bowling Club for hosting the finals – keeping the players and spectators fed and watered.
In closing the event, the Cowal Bowling Association secretary, Craig Houston, thanked Derek Logue for sponsoring the Cowal Junior Singles and wished everyone well for the remainder of the season.
