COUNCIL officers have been urged to look into the condition of Inveraray War Memorial after it was revealed the famous structure could ‘fall into the loch’.
A councillor raised the possibility after a report recommended that Campbeltown War Memorial should be allocated an additional £11,000 of Crown Estate funding.
Councillor Gary Mulvaney (Conservative, Helensburgh Central) was happy to agree to the recommendation, but asked an official to look into the memorial at Inveraray as well.
Fergus Murray, Argyll and Bute Council’s head of economic development, confirmed that officers were “very aware” of the condition of the memorial, by the town’s sea wall.
The discussion took place at a meeting of the council’s policy and resources committee on Thursday, December 5.
Councillor Mulvaney said: “I will happily endorse the recommendations, but regarding the War Memorial at Inveraray, I have had some representations from people around its current state.
“The pictures I have seen show it not to be in a great state of repair, and the same impact has taken place on the sea wall, with some deterioration.
“Are officers aware of this, and what actions are being taken to identify the short or long-term solutions? Without repair work, we are in danger of it falling into the loch.
“It is not in my ward, but people have made representations and sent pictures, and it is worth officers having a look.”
Mr Murray responded: “Officers are very aware of the situation there, and roads and infrastructure services are looking at it.
“It is to do with the condition of the sea wall, and that is why there is a barrier, but officers are looking at what they can do in the future, by Crown Estate funding or other funding.”
The committee unanimously agreed to the additional funding for the Campbeltown War Memorial, as well as granting permission to Argyll Countryside Trust to sell its eco-hub in Lochgilphead.
