Dunoon food premises gets go-ahead

Plans for a Dunoon premises to be converted from storage space to a food production area have been approved by council officers.

Hannah Clinch’s proposal for the site at 26A Hillfoot Street attracted one objection from a nearby resident during the planning process.

However, Argyll and Bute Council officials have awarded planning permission after ruling that concerns over parking had been addressed.

An officer said in a handling report: “Prior to the current use the site was part of a joiners’ workshop and store. The adjacent land uses comprise a mix of commercial, retail and residential.

“The common yard, and properties 28 Hillfoot Street (store), 26A, 26B, 26D, 26E originally formed a Joiners workshop and yard pre-1946. In 1946 the infill pend building 26 (flat) and 28 Hillfoot Street (shop) were added.

“In more recent years the buildings formed individual commercial stores and a white goods electrical repair workshop, associated with the former bakery building (outwith the application) at 26C Hillfoot Street, also accessed from the common yard.”

The officer added: “The area contains a diverse mix of building types namely residential, retail, commercial and industrial as you would expect in an area of mixed use such as a town centre.

“The visual impact of the proposals is considered to be acceptable. The colour and form of building has been chosen to blend with the diverse nature of the area and will have a positive effect on the townscape given the current dilapidated state of the building.

“It is considered that the proposal for refurbishment of the buildings and associated works is a suitable proposal… which would benefit the local economy in accordance with one of the central challenges for Argyll and Bute, that of delivering sustainable economic growth.”
