DUNOON Guides became the first ever local unit to win the prestigious Argyll Trefoil Quaich earlier this month when they were crowned winners of a special creative challenge.
Set last autumn, the Argyll Trefoil Guild tasked Guide units across the region with creating their own newspaper. The paper had to include at least four pages filled with stories, photos, and reports about their activities, achievements, and plans — giving a real insight into the life of the unit.
The 2nd Dunoon Guides, located on Victoria Road, fully embraced the challenge and the girls kicked things off by choosing a name for their paper through a vote before writing articles about a wide range of activities they’d taken part in, from Halloween fun and scarecrow making to singing carols, attending the remembrance parade, and fundraising at Dunoon Grammar School.
The final creation was compiled into a colourful, engaging newspaper which they submitted to the Guild.
Their efforts clearly impressed the judges, as the Dunoon Guides were announced as the overall winners earlier this year. To mark the occasion, members of the Argyll Trefoil Guild attended one of the unit’s Wednesday night meetings to present the girls with the Argyll Trefoil Quaich — a special trophy commissioned in 2010 to mark 100 years of Girl guiding.
The Quaich is awarded annually to the winners of a challenge set by the Guild, rotating through the various Guiding sections. This year’s newspaper challenge saw 2nd Dunoon Guides take the top spot — the first time the trophy has come to the town.
“We are very proud of the effort and enthusiasm that the girls showed for this challenge and feel honoured to receive the Quaich,” said a leader from the unit.
The Guides themselves were equally enthusiastic, who explained: “We loved working on this project. We felt it brought us closer together as a unit and inspired us to get writing. We thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to take part in one of these challenges and cant wait for the next one.” The 2nd Dunoon Guides meet weekly and are currently welcoming new members across all girl guiding sections, including Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers.
