THE ICONIC Bute Film Society has selected ten films ranging from mesmerising visions of the future to a quirky Icelandic fantasy as it begins its new season.
The upcoming package of movie treats includes a life- affirming Japanese drama and some hard-hitting British and US thrillers.
The season will begin on Sunday, October 26 2025 at the Winter Garden cinema with Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford, Sean Young and Rutger Hauer.
Films are going to be shown fortnightly throughout the winter months with a short break over the Christmas and New Year period.
Janet Bentley, chair of the society, told the Isle of Bute News: “After all the uncertainty about the cinema’s future, we’re thrilled that the steering group for the Winter Garden will keep the cinema operating until at least next spring.
“This allows our programme to go-ahead as normal this year. We’re starting with a film that didn’t attract droves of cinema-goers on its release in 1982, but it soon became a cult classic mainly viewed at home on television.
“So, the society is offering the rare opportunity to see Blade Runner on the big- screen!”
And that is something bound to attract aficionados of the movie who know all the lines (“Memories! You’re talking about memories!”) and highlights, as well as newcomers keen to have the big-screen experience.
Other movies include the 1967 classic, Cool Hand Luke, starring Paul Newman. The film explores themes of rebellion against oppressive authority, individualism, and the struggle for freedom.
Whisky Galore gets a screening, this time, it is the version from 2016, featuring Eddie Izzard. The Edinburgh Film Festival review of the remake said: “What makes the film so pleasurable is the humour and lyricism with which it tells its rousing story of whisky-loving small timers coming together to keep officialdom at bay.”
The organisers are encouraging you to turn up on October 26 and take out a Film Society membership. Or if you prefer to pay by bank transfer, please contact butefilmclub@ gmail.com in advance.
The membership fee for the season is £60, which will allow the society to cover increased costs. Membership allows a saving of £20 over the season. Membership can be purchased by card, cash or cheque. A one-off ticket is £8. Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm screening.
