DUNOON Speakers Club launched its 2025/26 season on Tuesday, September 30, with a refreshed meeting format and a packed programme at Cowal Indoor Bowling Club.
With membership numbers currently lower than usual, the club has streamlined evenings to feature one major speech of up to 20 minutes for deeper dives, followed by Speakers Choicean eight minute slot where members can get creative with a talk, reading, quiz or other ideas.
The opening address, The Anglo-Saxon Foot, was delivered by David Rarity, who used visual aids to explore how our feet evolved and perform throughout life–an engaging mix of storytelling and anatomy.
Derek Pullen then took the Speakers Choice slot, sharing behind-the-scenes tales from a Polish production of Miss Julie, drawing on his extensive experience in set building and stage logistics at home and abroad.
After a tea break chair, Allan Shaw, introduced the evening’s single topics prompt: Transportation What is the Future? Five members each had three minutes to speak off-the-cuff–an exercise designed to sharpen impromptu skills. The debate proved spirited; a couple of the strongest contributions cheerfully ran over time. A general evaluation rounded off the night, offering constructive feedback and highlights.
The club is keen to welcome new members and guests. The next meeting is on Tuesday, October 28, when visitors can learn more about the Association of Speakers Clubs and how Dunoon’s branch runs its sessions. Meetings take place every second Tuesday, 7.00pm for 7.45pm, finishing around 9.30pm. Parking is available behind Kirn and Hunters Quay Bowling Club.
For anyone looking to build confidence, sharpen speaking skills, or simply enjoy good company and conversation, Dunoon Speakers Club offers a
warm welcome.
