New talk series begins at Bute Museum
Local historian Dr Stuart Nisbet

THE WINTER programme of talks at Bute Museum kicked off this year with Glasgow historian Dr. Stuart Nisbet’s presentation, ‘The Clyde to The Caribbean.’

He discussed how sugar, cotton, and tobacco from the Clyde ports were linked to slave plantations in St. Kitts and Nevis, and how their wealthy owners gained land and titles in Scotland. This was a well-researched, compelling and thought-provoking introduction to the winter schedule.

The season continues with an exciting programme of talks covering topics such as the early years of the Bute Agricultural Society, tracking the progress of red squirrel colonies on Bute through DNA analysis and dolphins and other cetaceans of the Clyde.

Additionally, wildlife presenter Lucy Lapwing will deliver a talk focusing on the smaller creatures that live in Bute. Harriet Tatton from DigVentures will also discuss their projects in Cowal. These are just a small selection of the talks planned by Bute Museum.

For further details on talk topics, dates, and times, please visit the Winter Meetings page on the Museum website.

Attendance at these talks is free for members, with annual membership available for 30. While visitors are also welcome to attend, priority will be given to members.
