A FRESH north-westerly breeze provided challenging but enjoyable conditions for the latest Toward Seasports Club race in the Cumbrae 1 series.
Sailors took to the water in winds ranging from eight to 15 knots, with the conditions strengthening as the evening progressed. Racing followed course two, with all boats starting together, making for a busy and competitive start line.
There was early drama as the horn sounded, with the RS200 found to be just over the line and forced to turn back, cutting across the bows of Saorsa, which had made an excellent start. The Topper and Still Game also got away well, while the Oppie kept safely clear of the larger boats. Parallel Motion and Toots were close behind as the fleet settled into the race.
The first leg was a beat up to the opening mark, with competitors taking different tactical approaches. Some opted for the direct route through the moored boats, while others chose to sail the longer course in clearer water.
A run down to the second mark brought a memorable moment, with porpoises appearing nearby to inspect the action as the fleet sped past. From there, sailors reached back towards the start line to complete the triangular course.
The same route was repeated for three rounds, testing both boat handling and decision-making as the breeze continued to build. By the final lap, the stronger wind made conditions more demanding and created opportunities for the leaders to extend their advantage.
Saorsa made the most of the freshening conditions and sailed strongly to pull further ahead, securing a clear lead by the finish in another competitive evening on the water for the Toward club fleet.
