MEMBERS of Blairmore & Strone Golf Club enjoyed a memorable May, with fine weather providing ideal playing conditions and helping to produce some excellent golf throughout the month.
The club continued its popular Saturday morning competitions alongside Sunday afternoon Texas Scrambles, with much of the month’s attention focussed on the prestigious Marshall Paterson competition.
The long-standing event is played over three rounds and incorporates two trophies. The Marshall Cup is awarded to the player with the lowest aggregate gross score, while the Paterson Cup goes to the competitor with the lowest net total. The trophies were donated more than 40 years ago by John Marshall and Andrew Paterson and remain among the club’s most cherished honours.
This year’s Marshall Cup was won by Raymond Gorman, whose impressive aggregate gross score of 230 over the three rounds proved enough to secure the title. Lorraine Daw finished runner-up with a total gross score of 248.
Gorman also returned the lowest net aggregate score of 195. However, competition rules prevent the same player from winning both trophies, meaning the Paterson Cup was awarded to Neil Munroe, whose net total of 201 earned him the honour.
The club also contested the Volvo Cup during May, with Simon Whitehead continuing the excellent form he showed earlier in the season. Whitehead claimed victory with an outstanding net 62, while Lorraine Daw added another strong performance to her month by finishing second on net 64.
Away from home, Blairmore & Strone sent a strong team to compete in the Melville Cup at Cowal Golf Club and are now looking forward to welcoming visitors from across the region for the annual Dougie Hamilton Open on June 21.
The club’s popular 200 Club also returned, with two draws taking place after no draw was held in April. Congratulations went to Eileen Dargo and Norma O’Grady, who each collected prizes of £90.
