A HISTORIC Dunoon church has taken a major step towards a greener future with the blessing of new solar panels and an environmentally friendly heating system.
The congregation at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church on Kilbride Road welcomed the sunshine on Sunday, June 21, as they gathered to celebrate the completion of the major sustainability project.
The Right Revd David Railton, Bishop of Argyll and The Isles and former Rector of Holy Trinity, returned to the church to bless the improvements, which aim to protect the much- loved building for generations to come.
Consecrated in 1850 and designed by renowned architect John Henderson, Holy Trinity is one of Dunoon’s most notable examples of Gothic Revival architecture.
However, like many historic buildings, the church has faced challenges in recent years, including damp conditions and an ageing heating system.
The installation of a new infrared heating system will provide a warmer and more comfortable environment for worshippers and visitors throughout the year, while the addition of solar panels will help reduce running costs and lower the church’s carbon footprint.
The panels will also allow Holy Trinity to export surplus electricity back to the National Grid, generating income to support the upkeep of the building.
Future plans include the installation of an accessible toilet and repairs to the church tower, with hopes that its bells will once again ring out over Dunoon.
The project was supported by Benefact Trust, which provides funding to organisations working to make a positive impact within their communities.
Bishop David praised all those involved in delivering the improvements, including the Scottish Episcopal Church Net Zero team.
Rector of Holy Trinity, Revd David Rushton, said: “It has been incredibly encouraging to be part of this chapter in the life of Holy Trinity as we continue to offer a generous welcome for many years to come.”
Following the blessing ceremony, members of the congregation and visitors celebrated with a barbecue in the summer sunshine.
The church will continue its sustainability journey with a Net Zero Open Church event on September 5, giving visitors the chance to see the improvements and learn more about future plans for Holy Trinity and the wider Scottish Episcopal Church.
