Familiar face at Lochgilphead recognised after 30 years of service

The 59-year-old Criminal Justice Police Custody and Security Officer has spent her entire policing career at Lochgilphead Police Office.

Jane joined policing after an opportunity arose to recruit more women into custody roles in Lochgilphead. She had always been interested in police work and was one of four women selected.

Thirty years later, Jane remains in the same role and at the same police office.

While the name of her role has changed over the years, the purpose of her work has remained the same.

Her days can involve working with prisoners, helping people at the front counter, answering enquiries, and supporting police officers. She also deals with lost and found property and even the occasional lost dog.

Jane says it is the variety of the job and the people around her that have kept her motivated for three decades.

One of the most personal moments of her career came after the death of her husband. Jane says the support she received from colleagues and friends at Lochgilphead Police Office showed her what the policing family meant.

Reflecting on her career, Jane said: “My career so far has been full of emotions, laughter, tears, sadness and happiness and I would not have changed one thing.”

Receiving the Long Service and Good Conduct Award has given Jane and her colleagues the opportunity to reflect on three decades of service.

She believes every person working in policing has a part to play, whether they are a police officer or a member of police staff.

After 30 years, her advice to anyone considering a career in policing is simple. Find something you enjoy, take every opportunity, and remember that every role matters.
