PLANS for alterations to allow a former shop and flat to become a café/restaurant in Lochgilphead town centre have been approved.
Rahul Sharma’s application for listed building consent at 1 Colchester Square, and Flat 0 Right at 4 Portalloch Street, has been granted by Argyll and Bute Council.
The authority did not receive any objections or expressions of support from the public during the planning process, and considered that the plans would have “a neutral impact” on the listed building.
A council officer said in a handling report: “The proposal involves the reconfiguration of the ground floor through the removal of a non-original partition wall within the former shop area to create a restaurant seating area, bar, kitchen, storage facilities and customer WC, together with a takeaway area.
“Although no internal site visit was undertaken, the applicant submitted photographic evidence demonstrating the existing layout and condition of the premises.
“The images confirm that the affected areas contain no notable architectural detailing or historic features that contribute to the building’s special interest.
“The proposed alterations are therefore limited in nature and do not result in the loss of any features of historic or architectural significance.
“The works will facilitate the beneficial reuse of a vacant commercial unit, contributing positively to the vitality and viability of Lochgilphead town centre.”
The document added: “Having regard to the nature and extent of the proposed alterations, it is concluded that the works would preserve the special architectural and historic interest of the category C listed building.
“The internal alterations affect only modern fabric and do not result in the loss of historic features, whilst the proposed replacement windows, doors, flue and outdoor seating area have been designed and sited in a manner that respects the character of both the building and its conservation area setting.”
