Cove Park sound studio plans approved

PLANS for a sound studio and accommodation unit on the Rosneath Peninsula have been given the go-ahead by council officers.

Management at Cove Park, on Peaton Road, lodged the planning permission application with Argyll and Bute Council earlier this year.

Various external works, including hard-standing and a fence, also figure in the plans, which have now been approved after no objections or expressions of support were received from the public.

A council official said in a handling report: “The current application is for a new sound studio with ancillary residential accommodation for short-term residencies that seeks to enhance the capacity of Cove Park to support music and sound-based practice.

“The proposed site for the new building is nearby to the south of the main Jacobs Building and adjacent to the existing track that continues from the main car park, along the eastern side of the Jacobs Building, and from there winds down the hillside to serve the existing artist’s studio/residencies located within woodland some 200m to the south west of the main building.

“The site for the proposed sound studio/residence comprises a small level plateau that has been historically created by a modest level of excavation into the sloping land.

“Whilst this site (Cove Park as a whole) is located within the countryside development management zone, officers note that this is an established recreational/institutional campus which makes a positive contribution to the local economy and community.

“It is considered that the erection of a sound studio with associated residency will complement and enhance the facilities that Cove Park is able to offer to the wider artistic community.”

The report added: “The proposal is for a small-scale artist (sound) studio with associated residential accommodation which will complement the provision of artist’s creative spaces within an established artists residency campus and it is considered that this will have positive benefits to the local economy and community.

“The building is located on a site previously occupied by two temporary teaching buildings. The proposed building is modest in scale, located adjacent to the main building and integrates well within the local and wider landscape. It is considered that the proposal is of a high quality of architectural design.

“As such, officers consider that the proposed development will respect the visual character of the landscape and existing built development in accordance with design and place-making policies.”
