Child finds grenade on beach

A LOCAL father has described his alarm after a child discovered a suspected unexploded wartime grenade on the shoreline.

Craig Rooney was at home on Sunday, September 20, when he became aware that a child had found what appeared to be an explosive device while exploring the beach.

Mr Rooney immediately told the child to move away from the object before making his way to the scene.

He told the Dunoon Observer: “I told them to put it down and stay clear of it, I got in the car and drove down to them, arriving about ten minutes later, and had a quick look at it and I realised that it looked very realistic, I dialled 999 and the police came.

“I believe EOD arrived later that evening to make the device safe.”

Police Scotland confirmed in a Daily Record article on the incident that officers received a report at around 5.05pm on Sunday concerning possible ordnance discovered on a beach in Innellan.

Speaking to the Record, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “EOD attended and the item was made safe.”

The suspected device was reportedly found between rocks while the tide was out.

Mr Rooney said the incident was a frightening reminder of the potential dangers of picking up unidentified objects found along the shoreline.

The discovery comes as a reminder that historic military ordnance can occasionally be exposed along Scotland’s coastline. Anyone who encounters a suspected explosive device should not touch or move it, and should move away and contact the
emergency services.
