An on-call firefighters women’s networking group from East and West Dunbartonshire and Argyll and Bute convened at Inveraray Community Fire Station for an inspiring event.
The meeting featured a keynote address from Pippa Milne, Chief Executive of Argyll and Bute Council, who shared insights from her career. Pippa highlighted the importance of supportive networks and commended the critical role on-call firefighters play in their communities.
“The fire service is such a vital part of our communities,” Pippa said. “Your dedication makes a real difference, and sharing your experiences could inspire someone else to step up and make that difference too.”
In a further bid to promote the role, Pippa invited the group to participate in one of her podcasts, aiming to encourage more women to consider joining the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS).
The event also included discussions on leadership, career development, and mentoring, offering opportunities for the firefighters to explore pathways for growth within the service.
On-call firefighter Sarah Keating, from Appin Community Fire Station, found the event particularly motivating. “Hearing Pippa’s journey was so encouraging,” she said. “It’s good to know that with determination and support, there is no limit to what we can achieve.”
The gathering underscored the value of collaboration and mentorship in empowering women within the fire service, while also working to inspire future generations to take up the role.
