RNLI Tighnabruaich crew assist stranded yacht near Toward

The RNLI volunteer crew from Tighnabruaich was called into action by HM Coastguard to assist a 23ft yacht adrift near Toward after it ran out of fuel. With the neighbouring RNLI station at Largs temporarily unavailable, Tighnabruaich’s crew responded to the call, venturing into less familiar waters.

Upon arrival, the crew found the yacht’s occupant safe but concerned about worsening weather conditions. The sailor intended to head to Loch Riddon for shelter from the forecasted strong winds. Helm Nigel Sim explained: “We provided him with petrol, enabling him to motor under his own power. The lifeboat then escorted him safely into Rothesay, where he was secured at a berth.”

With adverse weather expected, the crew took the opportunity to offer safety advice. Nigel added: “We highlighted the importance of having suitable navigation lights and a working VHF radio. Before setting sail, it’s crucial to check the weather forecast and tide times and always carry a reliable means of calling for help.”

The RNLI continues to emphasise the importance of preparation and safety at sea, particularly as unpredictable conditions can arise. The swift response and support from Tighnabruaich’s volunteers ensured the yacht and its occupant reached safety without further incident.
