Kilmun Carpet Bowling Club prize-giving

The Kilmun Carpet Bowlers gathered in high spirits at the Ardentinny Hotel last Thursday evening, marking the end of another fantastic season with a prize-giving ceremony.

The event was particularly special this year, as it saw the continued success of seasoned players and the exciting involvement of many new members.

The coveted Player of the Year trophy, a fiercely contested title, was up for grabs, with Dougie Menzies, a long-time champion, looking to add another victory to his already impressive record.

Since 2004, Dougie has only missed out on the trophy once, and this year was no exception.

Going into the final night of competition, Dougie was trailing Fraser Pollock by a single point, with Fraser holding 11 points and Dougie at ten.

Dougie needed a win to at least draw level—and that’s exactly what he did, securing the title alongside Fraser in a rare joint win.

Ruth Lee, who had put in a strong performance throughout the season, finished as runner-up with ten points, while several other players, including Pam Horton, Jim McLean, A Maclean, Alison Chalmers, and Chris Bowen rounded out the top contenders.

A highlight of the evening was the introduction of a new trophy, the William Love Trophy, which commemorates a cherished member of the community.

The inaugural winners of this trophy were none other than Dougie Menzies and junior bowler Fraser Pollock.

Fraser’s talent and enthusiasm have been a source of joy for all, as he continues to impress with his variety of tricky shots.

In fact, it’s not unusual to see Fraser offering Dougie advice on the best way to play certain shots, providing an amusing yet heart-warming dynamic.

Dougie, as always, was gracious in presenting the trophies, congratulating his fellow bowlers for their hard work and sportsmanship over the course of the season.

Frances McLean, speaking on behalf of the new members, expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome she and others had received since joining the club.

The club’s inclusive spirit, she noted, had made their experience enjoyable and fulfilling, creating lasting friendships and memories.

As the evening came to a close, it was clear that the Kilmun Carpet Bowls Club has had another successful and vibrant season.

The blend of seasoned veterans and eager newcomers has made for a wonderful atmosphere, and with such strong performances from all involved, it’s safe to say that next year will be just as exciting.
