Dunoon Grammar School’s head teacher David Mitchell, has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire), in the King’s Birthday Honours List for his outstanding services to education.
Mr Mitchell is one of a record eight residents across Argyll and Bute, including a couple and a family, all of whom are being individually recognised for their contributions, making it an extraordinary year for local recognition.
Mr Mitchells award comes on the back of a successful spell for Dunoon Grammar School. In the past few years the school has earned national and international recognition for its commitment to community and education. In 2022, it won the Worlds Best School Prize for Community Collaboration, celebrating its partnerships and initiatives such as a Covid-19 recovery programme and projects in Malawi.
The school also received the Gaelic Education Award for promoting Gaelic Medium and Learner Education. Additionally, it was shortlisted for the Business Education Awards for its local projects and won two awards at the Apps for Good Showcase.
Reflecting on his award this week Mr Mitchell told this newspaper: When I received the letter informing me that I had been awarded an MBE, I was completely shocked. Being a head teacher is an incredible role, but serving as the head teacher at Dunoon Grammar School is a true honour.
He added: I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside such dedicated staff and inspiring young people, both past and present. Thank you also to our parents, carers, and the entire community for their ongoing support of our school. Im also deeply grateful to have a wonderfully supportive family
