VJ Day exhibition in Strachur

STRACHUR and District Local History Society is set to stage an exhibition in Strachur Memorial Hall to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the ending of the Second World War in 1945.

The Strachur and Upper Loch Fyne area was basically one huge training camp with landing exercises, including live firing, taking place virtually in the villages.

The exhibition will give visitors the chance to relive life on the home front in a reconstructed WW2 living room. They will also have the opportunity to buy signed copies of the story of former Glenbranter

resident Centenarian Pete Smith. Still going strong after horrendous experiences as a PoW for most of the war.

There will also be wartime memorabilia and artefacts allowing people to learn the story of Strachur builders Fergussons constructing training camps at Inveraray.

There is also the chance to learn about the men and women of Strachur who served throughout the war in the forces and Merchant Service, not all of whom returned, and to hear the Hub Choir performing popular songs of the

era. The exhibition takes place on August 16.

Although each name in the war memorial within the hall represents a cherished local person, some will be highlighted at the exhibition to show the sacrifice made by all, for the community, county and country.

An example, Flight Sergeant Duncan Fleming, is reproduced below.
