AFTER A well- earned summer break following the success of Nunsense earlier this year, Cowal Choral Club is on the lookout for new members to join them as they prepare for their ever- popular December concerts.
The new season begins with a relaxed Cheese and Wine evening at The Boat House, Victoria Parade, Dunoon, on Thursday 4th September at 7pm. Far from a stuffy registration night, it’s an informal opportunity to chat to members, meet Musical Director Andrew Nicol, enjoy some nibbles (wine, soft drinks and snacks will all be on offer), and even try out a piece or two from the upcoming concert programme.
“The cheese and wine evenings are always good fun,” said one club member. “It’s a chance to meet everyone without any pressure – you don’t have to audition to join the club, you don’t have to be able to read music, you don’t even need to be confident. If you enjoy singing, just come along!”
And if the words “Choral Club” conjure up images of stern faces and dusty hymn books, it’s time to think again. Last year’s Christmas concert featured music by Elton John and Stevie Wonder alongside choral and jazz pieces. This isn’t a choir for “serious” singers only – there really is something for everyone.
There’s also a common misconception that the club is “full of little old ladies”, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. While there are currently more women than men, Cowal Choral Club welcomes members of all ages, with free membership for school pupils aged 14 and over. However, they would love to see more younger voices join them – especially men. So if you’re a guy who can belt out Oasis at karaoke or sing in a local band, you’ll fit right in!
“If you want a laugh and good company while singing, I can highly recommend it.” a member explained, while another added, “Lovely friendly group of people.
Join us. I am sure you will get hooked.”
So come along, have a chat and a wee sing, and see what it’s all about. You’ll be made to feel very welcome!
