The Bute Repair Café took place over the past weekend and was a great success for all involved.
The event was held at the Isle of Bute Seasports Club and was organised by a few local members of the Scottish Green Party to promote a culture of repair and keeping things in use for longer, rather than throwing it away prematurely.
At the heart of this event was six local volunteers, who very generously gave their time and expertise and enthusiasm to repair people’s things–all for free.
Items that were looked at on the day included bicycles, computers, mobiles, electrical items, clothes whilst providing tool sharpening and jewellery cleaning services.
There was a wealth of skills on display, and the organisers were very grateful to them for those who played a vital role in the event.
And of course, true to its name, the Repair Café also provided teas, coffees and biscuits–also for free–so people could wait patiently and mingle.
There was a steady stream of people showing up with all sorts of things needing looked at, and most went away happy with the outcome.
All-in-all, 30 people brought at least 53 items along, which kept everyone busy–especially the tool sharpening station.
The organisers have confirmed they will revisit the event again in the future, and have asked people to keep an eye out for it.
They are also keen to add repair volunteers with existing or new skills to the group, but stressed that the door is open anyone who wants to be involved.
