Argyll and Bute's depute provost nominated for award

ARGYLL and Bute Council’s depute provost has been shortlisted for a national community champion award.

Councillor Jan Brown (SNP, Mid Argyll) is up for the prize at the 2025 LGIU and CCLA Councillor Awards, which are being held in Scotland for the eighth time.

She has been nominated for her work “to safeguard the historic township of Auchindrain” and for her support for local charities and organisations.

A ceremony will take place in Glasgow’s City Chambers on Wednesday, November 5 to announce the winners of the prizes.

Councillor Brown became depute provost in April 2024, standing in where needed for Provost Douglas Philand (Independent, Mid Argyll).

A statement on behalf of the award organisers said: “These awards highlight the vital contribution of councillors, often the unsung heroes of local democracy.

“From championing residents’ interests to leading innovation in public services, councillors play a crucial role in shaping communities and improving lives, and they do so while giving up their time and energy for what is often a voluntary, unpaid role.

“Councillor Jan Brown of Argyll and Bute Council is well known in the local community as a dedicated and hardworking councillor.

“Her nomination shone a light on her remarkable work to safeguard the historic Township of Auchindrain, the last surviving Highland Township and a site of great historical significance, which came under threat of closure.

“Her practical support of many local charities and organisations is also brought to the fore in the nomination.”

Councillors from Angus, Orkney and East Dunbartonshire Councils complete the shortlist for the community champion award, one of five accolades which will be presented on the evening.
