Conservation volunteers have their cake and eat it

Napoleon Bonaparte was known to have said that an army marches on its stomach.

Although with not quite the same size of army, the hardy band of conservation volunteers from Bute Conservation Trusthad to keep themselves satiated to meet the many tasks that they face.

And the smiles were from ear to ear when a large Victoria sponge was provided during a break in planting hedges at Kerrytonlia Farm on a sunny morning last Wednesday, April 29.

Several hundred metres of hedging had already been planted and the volunteers had been asked to assist with filling awkward gaps in the roadside hedge along the stretch from the farm to Kingarth.

The fruits of their labour will not be seen immediately, but the long-term impact from similar planting the volunteers helped with some five years ago can be seen along the path from the car park down to Scalpsie Bay beach.

Work is underway to repair the steps from the Ardscalpsie platform down to Scalpsie Bay beach and, in the meantime, walkers are asked to beware when negotiating this part of the path.
