Strachur–Dunoon bow out of Bullough Cup

A HEAVILY depleted Strachur-Dunoon Shinty Club side showed real character on their travels to Lochgilphead in the Bullough Cup, despite ultimately falling to a 4-2 defeat against a clinical Kilmory outfit.

With eight players missing from the squad that had defeated Stirling the previous weekend, the Cowal side knew they faced an uphill challenge before throw-up. And while the result saw hosts Kilmory Camanachd progress to the next round, there was plenty for Strachur-Dunoon to take encouragement from in a committed all-round performance.

The visitors made a strong start, with returning forward Duncan Smart making an immediate impact. Duncan, back in action for the month, struck twice in the first half to give Strachur-Dunoon a deserved early advantage and a platform to build on.

However, as the match wore on, Kilmory’s sharp finishing proved decisive, with the home side turning the game around and securing their place in the next round of the competition.

Despite the result, there were notable positives for the Cowal side. Defensively, Donald Macdiarmid and Liam Robertson both returned to the back line and produced solid shifts, despite limited game time so far this season.

In midfield, James Roy delivered a standout performance and was deservedly named Man of the Match. Operating at the centre of the park, Roy worked tirelessly throughout against an energetic Kilmory midfield. His performance was proudly recognised alongside his team sponsorship from LML Lift LTD.

The club also extended thanks to their hosts for excellent hospitality on the day, with both sides sharing a competitive encounter.

Attention now turns back to league action, with Strachur-Dunoon preparing for a crucial away fixture against Bute Shinty Club. The Cowal side will be hoping to build on the positives from Lochgilphead as they look to return to winning ways, and are encouraging travelling support to make the short trip to the island.
