Dunoon FC forms after years without a team in the town

A BAND of amateur footballers from Cowal have come together to form Dunoons newest football team, Dunoon FC, ending an extended period without a local football team for adults.

Throughout the 20th century Cowal’s footballing network was thriving, with the success of teams like Dunoon Amateurs and Dunoon Athletic at the heart of it, but numbers dwindled in the 21st century, culminating in the Ams folding in 2023.

But with a strong turnout at local games during the week, Garry Stewart had the idea to bring people together in an organised fashion, and Dunoon FC was born.

A spokesperson for the club said: “It’s been nearly three years since Dunoon Amateurs folded in August 2023.

“We recently noticed growing numbers at local night games, Garry Stewart put the idea out there and it has since had a lot of interest. He’s brought us together.”

The club has brought in its first manager, Leon Braid, who will lead the team into their first game a friendly against MISC FC at the Battery Park in Greenock on June 21.

Organisers have urged anyone who would be interested in sponsoring the club and providing the team with kits to get in touch on 07851463210.
