Letter to the Editor -Don’t blame the messenger

Editor – The headline about the potential loss of our swimming pool in last week’s Observer was complete news to me as a monthly paying customer. I also understand it was complete news (and a shock) to the staff in the pool.

Live Argyll sent out a message to all their subscribers late on Friday 12th saying that: “It’s disappointing to see another negative and misleading headline from the Dunoon Observer (12/06/2026)”

Careful comparison of the full email from Live Argyll and the words reportedly used by Cllr Moreland leads to the conclusion that there are 2 differing views of the state of the pool. That should not be the case and I, for one, have no idea which version is correct.

The real culprits here are Argyll & Bute Council’s

comms team. They should have been well ahead of this and should have issued a press release on the state of play with the pool as soon as the position was known, and in advance of local councillors attending community council meetings. The last customers heard was that there was to be an announcement on a chosen site for the new pool in April. Instead, there was silence. For customers and staff to be alarmed at the local paper’s headline is inexcusable no matter how you look at it.

Live Argyll should not be shackled by the council’s comms team.

Perhaps the communications team in the council should learn how to communicate.
