Kyles ladies beat Tarbert in annual Fyne Ferry Friendly

Kyles of Bute Golf Club saw a busy few days of competition across its men’s, junior and ladies’ sections, despite poor weather affecting the weekend.

The gents’ section played for the Evergreen Strimming Services Trophy on Sunday, August 9, after heavy rain and poor conditions on Saturday and into Sunday.

Following a course inspection, the match secretary decided the competition could go ahead.

Mike McIntosh claimed first place with a net score of 65, while Andy Tomlinson finished second with a net 67.

There was a three-way tie for third place, with Peter Mobeck, Rob Anderson and Niall McFarlane all recording net scores of 69.

Gordon Whyte took the scratch prize with an excellent gross score of 69. There were also two twos recorded during the competition, by Jim Carruthers and Whyte.

Captain Peter Mobeck presented McIntosh with the trophy, with the club thanking Stuart and Viktoria for sponsoring the day’s competition.

The club’s junior section was also in action on Monday, August 10, with several competitions taking place.

Ethan Kerr won the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf qualifier with a net score of 66, while Sorley Kerr claimed the Road to Golf Stableford competition with 35 points.

Sorley also became the club’s 2026 Scratch Champion after recording a gross score of 88, while Callum Perlich won the 2026 Handicap Championship with a net 69.

Nine juniors played 18 holes, with a further eight taking part over approximately six holes. The club said the weather and golf were both excellent on the day.

A special thank you was also given to Justin Rose for his continued support of junior golf and for providing prizes.

The ladies’ section also enjoyed a successful few days.

Mhairi Carruthers and Lucie Cooney were joint winners of the 2 Clubs and Putter nine-hole competition after braving the difficult weather conditions.

The annual Fyne Ferry Friendly against Tarbert Ladies then provided another highlight, with the two clubs competing in a Stableford competition.

Kyles came out on top with 113 points, compared with Tarbert’s 97.

The club now looks ahead to this coming Sunday, August 16, when a 10-man Kyles of Bute team will travel to Cowal for a match against Cowal.

The Cowal course, which is normally closed to visitors on Sundays until 1.30pm, will be available to visitors and others during the day.
