Bolton claims Port Bannatyne Championship title
Caleb Bolton receives the PBGC Championship Trophy off defeated finalist and club captain Matthew Dunn

PORT BANNATYNE Golf Club enjoyed a memorable weekend of competition as members battled it out in the finals of both the Championship and Arthur Slack Handicap trophies.

Saturday saw finalists take to the course for the club’s showpiece events, with the Championship contested over 36 holes and the Arthur Slack Trophy decided over a single afternoon round.

In the Championship final, Matthew Dunn and Caleb Bolton faced off after both progressing through their quarter-finals and semi-finals in impressive fashion.

The opening 18 holes proved to be a closely fought contest, with neither golfer able to establish control.

Matthew made the first breakthrough on the fifth hole and maintained a narrow one-hole advantage until the turn before Caleb responded on the 11th to level matters.

The remaining holes of the morning round were halved, sending the pair into lunch all square.

After the break, Caleb came out strongly, winning two of the opening four holes to move two ahead after 22 holes.

Matthew responded in style, showing the form that regularly sees him contend in major club competitions by reeling off three consecutive birdies to move one ahead after 26 holes.

Momentum continued to swing throughout the afternoon and Caleb regained the initiative by winning holes 27 and 28.

A further success at the 32nd gave him a two-hole cushion with four to play.

Matthew fought back to win one of the closing holes but was unable to find the birdie required at the last to force extra holes, with Caleb securing the Championship Trophy by a single hole.

The Arthur Slack Handicap Trophy also produced a closely contested final as father and son Hector and John Whitelaw went head-to-head.

Hector rolled back the years with another strong performance, but John established an early lead and held a one-hole advantage at the turn.

The pair continued to exchange holes through the back nine but John remained steady, producing consistent par golf to maintain his slender lead.

With time running out for Hector’s late challenge, John held on to win the Arthur Slack Trophy by one hole and complete a memorable family final.

The club also celebrated the success of its first junior medal competition in years, held on Monday.

There was an encouraging turnout, with Rory Lambertini taking first place after returning a score of 81 (61).

Lloyd Robertson finished second with 92 (65), while Cameron Fisher placed third with 88 (71).

There was further praise for Championship winner Caleb Bolton, who followed up his weekend success with a scratch 72 (73).

Club officials said they will now consider how regularly junior medal competitions can be held and whether a Junior Championship could be introduced in future.

Port Bannatyne Golf Club is also encouraging more young people to get involved, with annual membership available for under-18s for £20.
