THE iconic paddle steamer Waverley is back on the Clyde, with Dunoon and Bute once again among the ports welcoming the historic vessel during her landmark 80th anniversary season.
Following a successful start to the summer, the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer has returned to her home waters and will continue offering cruises around the Clyde until Sunday, August 30, giving passengers the chance to step aboard one of Scotland’s most recognisable maritime attractions.
As part of this year’s programme, Waverley will call regularly at Dunoon and Rothesay, alongside sailings from Glasgow, Greenock, Largs, Ayr, Brodick and other Clyde ports.
Passengers boarding in Dunoon and Rothesay will be able to enjoy cruises to destinations including Arran, Campbeltown, Millport and around the Firth of Clyde, while experiencing the sights, sounds and traditions of a classic Clyde steamer.
This year is particularly significant as it marks 80 years since Waverley was launched in 1946.
To celebrate the milestone, Waverley Excursions has unveiled a new advertising campaign across Glasgow, promoting the vessel as “Glasgow’s Favourite Steamer” and “Glasgow’s Best-Looking 80 Year Old”, highlighting the paddle steamer’s long association with the River Clyde.
Passengers can still enjoy many of the experiences that have made Waverley famous, including visiting the engine room to hear the telegraph ring, watching the giant paddle wheels in action and relaxing in the ship’s traditional period lounges while taking in the scenery of Scotland’s west coast.
Families are also being encouraged to make the most of the summer programme, with children aged between five and 16 travelling for £1 on Glasgow and Clyde Coast sailings, while children under five travel free. Selected cruises also include the popular Seniors Bring a Friend Free offer.
Waverley remains the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer and continues to attract thousands of passengers every year, with her regular calls at Dunoon and Rothesay providing an opportunity for local residents and visitors alike to experience a unique part of Scotland’s maritime heritage.
Bookings for this summer’s sailings are now open through Waverley Excursions.
