BOAT and trailer owners have been given 15 days to remove their property from a road in Kilchattan Bay or risk it being removed and disposed of by Argyll and Bute Council.
The warning relates to boats and trailers being left on the B881 near the Kayak Centre, following complaints from residents about vessels and trailers being stored there for extended periods.
The council said notices will now be placed on boats and trailers in the area, while registered owners will also be contacted where they can be traced.
Owners will then have 15 days to remove their property before the council considers taking further action.
The local authority said it is acting under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978, which gives councils powers to remove and arrange the disposal of abandoned vehicles. Abandoning a vehicle without lawful authority is also a criminal offence under the legislation.
Anyone whose property is removed could also face a £300 charge for removal and disposal under regulations governing the removal, storage and disposal of vehicles in Scotland.
Councillor John Armour, Argyll and Bute Council’s Policy Lead for Roads, Transport and Amenity Services, said the action followed several complaints from people living in the area.
He said: “After receiving several complaints from residents, who are tired of seeing lines of trailers and boats parked for extended periods of time, we are acting.
“This is a public street and not a private storage facility.
“We’re asking anyone who is using the street to store their boat to remove it in the next 15 days or risk losing it.
“We want to avoid removing and destroying your property, so please find alternative storage. Thank you for your assistance.”
The council has also warned owners not simply to relocate boats or trailers to another area of land owned, controlled or managed by the local authority.
Owners should ensure they have the necessary permission before moving their property to an alternative storage location.
