MEMBERS OF Riverside Leisure Centre have been left frustrated after it was confirmed that it’s popular health suite will not reopen, despite hopes for a long-awaited refurbishment.
The suite, which had been a valued part of the centre for years, with a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi , initially closed last March for what was billed as an ‘exciting transformation.’
During early refurbishment works, contractors uncovered corrosion in the building’s steel frame. While there is no immediate safety risk, structural issues have now put a permanent stop to any reopening.
liveArgyll, who operate the facility, from the building which is owned by Argyll and Bute Council, confirmed the closure in an official statement, a portion of which read: “As part of this essential maintenance work, there may be some temporary disruptions or partial closures in the coming months, but every effort will be made to minimise the impact on facility users.
“Despite the setback, Riverside remains committed to providing high-quality health and wellbeing facilities, and alternative options are being explored to continue offering valuable services to the community. Members can rest assured that updates will be shared regularly, ensuring transparency and clarity as the situation evolves.
‘Riverside remains open, safe, and committed to serving its members. While the loss of the Health Suite is unfortunate, the team is focused on the future— maintaining and improving the facilities that make Riverside a vital part of the community.”
During last month’s council budget meeting it was confirmed that £200,000 had been set aside for a business case into locating an alternative site for a brand new leisure centre in Dunoon.
The money will be specifically used to determine suitable sites for a new facility as the current leisure centre’s condition continues to be a major concern.
