SEVENTEEN-year-old Dani Bancks has made history for Dunoon Amateur Boxing Club, claiming the Under-17 Junior Featherweight Scottish Novice Championship title – her second national crown in a single year.
The young fighter, who trains under head coach Jordan at the Dunoon-based club, delivered a composed and clinical performance in the final, earning a unanimous decision and cementing her place among Scotland’s brightest boxing prospects.
“When my hand was raised, I felt a sense of relief first then just happiness”, Dani said. “By the middle of the second round I thought I had it, but in boxing you can never be too sure.
Her tactical awareness and discipline were key, Dani explained: “I was chill and relaxed and felt locked in. I focused as I have been told by coach and took my time. I have been told I have a great jab and I used footwork and head movements to try to avoid my opponents attempts to hit me.”
This latest victory adds to an incredible 12 months for Dani, who has already won two Scottish titles, two Box Cup golds, and silver medals at both the Golden Gloves and another international box cup. Her achievements have also earned her a nomination at the 2025 Scottish Sports Awards.
“It still feels amazing to be Dunoon’s first female boxer and now a two-time Scottish champion in one year”, Dani said. “I hope it inspires more girls to come and train at the club. I might be the first, but I definitely wont be the last.”
Next up for Dani is the Global Glove Box Cup later this month, which attracts clubs from around the world. She’ll then begin preparing for two more national championships early next year.
She paid tribute to her sponsors Craig and Sam from Ferguslie Garage, John at Josimo Studio, and her coach Jordan for their continued support: “Jordan motivates and inspires me every day, she said. It’s been such a fun year and Im so grateful for everyone who’s helped me get here.”
Speaking to this newspaper about Dani’s victory at the weekend, head coach Jordan couldn’t hide his pride. “We couldn’t be prouder”, he said. “Dani’s name will be forever in the club’s history our first female boxer, first female champion, and first Box Cup champion. She’s helped put Dunoon on the map in the amateur boxing scene.”
Jordan said success stories like Dani’s often bring a boost in interest and attendance, especially from young people. “We want the club to be a safe, supportive space that gives people a sense of belonging and focus”, he said. “We’re also working towards setting up dedicated female classes, and we’re always looking for new coaches and sponsors to help us grow.”
The club has been developing its youth programme and expects several new boxers to step into the ring next year and hopefully a few more champions.
Jordan explained: “There are two main factors we focus on fitness and technique. We have different class abilities to try and develop these. Every boxer is different and I work with them to try to maximise their potential. The key to success is their commitment. As a club we welcome anyone who is interested in boxing for fitness or looking to join the amateur boxing squad. We are pleased with the direction the club is going and we have a lot more to come.”
He added: “A lot of what we do wouldn’t be possible without the help of our sponsors, Fyne Raja Restaurant and C&S Contractors. Everyone at the club is proud of Dani and excited for what’s to come in 2026.”
Dunoon Amateur Boxing Club welcomes new members of all ages and abilities whether for fitness, fun, or competitive boxing. For Dani Bancks, the road ahead is already looking golden.
