IT WAS a day of mixed fortunes for Cowal FC during last Sunday’s Glasgow Community Football League fixtures, as the team bounced back from a heavy opening defeat to earn a hard-fought 1–0 victory in their second match of the day.
Cowal’s morning game saw them struggle to get going against a slick Queen’s Park Strangers side, who combined physicality with sharp technical play. Cowal found themselves three goals down by half-time, and despite a more competitive showing after the break, they couldn’t find a way through and eventually fell 4–0.
There were positives, however, with the return of Anna Nicolson adding much-needed energy in midfield. Alongside Skye Kilgallon and Ruth MacPherson, she helped Cowal turn the second half into more of a contest, creating a couple of decent chances that were unlucky not to yield a goal.
The team regrouped impressively for the afternoon fixture against Rowstars United, a new but technically strong side. After a tight start, Kilgallon produced a brilliant finish to put Cowal ahead. From there, it was all about resilience.
Keeper Ramona Fomina pulled off a string of important saves to keep Rowstars at bay, and Julka Gunn produced a dramatic last-minute clearance off the line to secure a well-deserved three points.
The win leaves Cowal mid-table, a solid position for a team recently promoted to the division. The management say this season is all about consolidation and learning, and there were plenty of lessons to take from both matches.
Gunn was named Player of the Day for her tireless defending and crucial goal-line heroics.
Next up, Cowal FC face a major test on Sunday, November 23, at Firhill Sports Complex, where they’ll meet the two teams currently joint-top of the table on 10 points.
The squad hopes to welcome back Jamie Collings and Caoimhe Cryans, who were unavailable this week, while striker Shannon Finnegan could make her return from injury soon.
However, the team will be without goalkeeper Catherine Pearman-White for the remainder of the season after sustaining a serious injury.
Matchday squad: Ramona Fomina, Fay Robertson, Emmerson Low, Ruth MacPherson, Anna Nicolson, Ayleigh Ramage, Claire Segeren, Julka Gunn, Rachel Knight, Stephanie Siegerson, Skye Kilgallon, Nicole Gallagher.
