Second Sea Lord awards honours to long serving royal navy personnel
Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Sir Martin Connell, awarding Captain Underwood Royal Navy his long service & good conduct clasp and his Wider Service Medal.

During a recent visit to HM Naval Base Clyde, Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Paul Beattie CBE, awarded prestigious awards to Naval personnel.

Yesterday (Dec 2), Second Sea Lord presented seven awards to HMNB Clyde staff in the HMS Neptune Supermess. HMS Neptune is the shore-based establishment at HMNB Clyde, looking after Royal Navy personnel when they are not deployed or drafted to a ship or boat.

Warrant Officer Two (WO2) Neil Errington, Petty Officer (PO) Billy Mason and Lieutenant (Lt) Ian Gregory received Wider Service Medals (WSM), whilst WO2 Paul Wilson was awarded his Warrant of Appointment. Captain Richard Underwood was presented a WSM alongside his Long Service and Good Conduct (LS&GC) medal and Warrant Officer One (WO1) Stefano Mannucci and Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Paul Christie, who, after an exemplary 45 years of service each, were awarded the Third Clasp to their LS&GC.

WO1 Mannucci first joined the Royal Navy in 1980 as an Artificer Apprentice at HMS Fisgard in Woolwich. He qualified in 1984 as a Marine Engineer Artificer (MEA) and was drafted to HMS Minerva – a Leander-Class Frigate that formed part of the ‘Bristol Group’ during the Falkland’s War – for his first time at sea. He then joined HMS Dolphin a few years later, undertaking submariner training and in 1987 joined HMS Sceptre in refit.

His career has spanned from Leander-Class and Duke-Class ships to Swiftsure-Class and Vanguard-Class nuclear-powered submarines. He was selected for Command Warrant Officer Submarines and during the Covid-19 Pandemic, was appointed the Base Warrant Officer of HMNB Clyde, helping to run the site and negotiate the policy details filtered down from Westminster and the Scottish Parliaments. More recently, he has been working in the Superintendent Faslane Site Organisation, contributing toward the improvement of the Waterfront.

His Divisional Officer and Waterfront Operations Manager Lt Eleanor Malcolm said: “WO1 Mannucci’s energy, tenacity, and dedication are unparalleled, and his contributions to the Submarine Service, HMNB Clyde, and the Royal Navy are exemplary.”

“He is a true credit to his service, and I wholeheartedly support his recognition with the award of his third clasp, a testament to his unwavering loyalty and commitment to the Crown.”
