RECYCLING collections have resumed on two Argyll and Bute islands after issues with collection vehicles.
Council workers were unable to carry out their work collecting the blue bins on Islay and Jura, with many residents reportedly left with mounting waste during an extended period.
The disruption was caused by vehicle breakdowns and delays to repairs, meaning recycling services had to be suspended.
A councillor was informed by officials that parts for the islands’ recycling collection vehicle were damaged during delivery and had to be re-sent.
A replacement vehicle has now been sourced and was recently transported to Islay to allow collections to take place.
Councillor Alastair Redman (Independent, Kintyre and the Islands) said: “Residents across Islay and Jura were left dealing with an unacceptable level of uncertainty.
“Recycling collections are a basic service, and when they are disrupted, it is essential that clear communication and timely solutions are in place.
“I am pleased to see that collections have now resumed, but it is important that lessons are learned from this situation. Our communities deserve reliable services and a council response that reflects the realities of island living.”
A council official also told Councillor Redman that recycling collections had now resumed on Islay and Jura as per residents’ usual schedules.
An update on the authority’s website also asks that bins are placed for collection on their usual date.
Councillor Redman also said that he will continue to monitor the situation and follow up with council services as required.
