Ferry terminal upgrade works are approved on Cowal peninsula

WORKS at a ferry terminal on the Cowal peninsula, including the widening of its slipway, have been approved by council officers.

Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd also requested an extension of its existing marshalling area at Portavadie ferry terminal, allowing space to be created for an extra seven parking bays.

A new pedestrian walkway, and the creation of a new vehicle barrier and pedestrian handrail, also formed part of the plans.

Argyll and Bute Council received no representations from the public, expressing objection or support, during the planning process, and planning permission has now been formally granted for the work.

A council officer said in a handling report: “The proposal involves the widening of the existing ferry slipway on the southwestern side by 13 metres.

“The existing carriageway and marshalling area will also be widened on the south western side by five metres to provide an additional seven vehicle spaces.

“A pedestrian footway will also be added to the slipway on the south western side with a modular pedestrian barrier with handrail. This will connect with the concreate apron at the ticket office building.

“To create the pedestrian barrier the existing cycle storage and boulder will be relocated. The existing junction box and lighting will be relocated with along with the addition of three additional lighting columns. These will be connected by twin wall cable ducting.

“The proposed alterations are within the site of an existing working ferry terminal and are of an appropriate design, size, and scale.

“The proposed alterations will not have a significant impact on the character and amenity of the ferry terminal and the surrounding landscape.”
