MORE than 1 million is to be invested in Dunoon town centre in a bid to tackle empty properties, improve the streetscape and attract more residents, businesses and visitors.
Dunoon is set to receive 1.08 million from the UK Governments Community Regeneration Partnership Fund (CRPF), part of a 20 million funding package supporting projects across Argyll and Bute.
The first phase will see 200,000 invested by March 2027 through the new Dunoon Town Centre Investment Scheme.
The funding will target priorities identified in the Dunoon and Kirn Local Place Plan, with a focus on bringing vacant and under-used buildings back into use, improving shopfronts and supporting the development of new business premises, visitor accommodation and town centre housing.
Businesses and property owners will be able to seek support to repair and improve premises, including shopfronts within Dunoons Conservation Area.
Dunoon ward councillor and policy lead for finance Ross Moreland said: “It is great to see the first batch of CRP funding coming into the town. A lot of work went into securing these funds from the UK government so it’s good to see them being utilised and spent on our town centre. There is still over three quarters of a million to spend in Dunoon and I look forward to seeing those projects improve our town.”
The scheme will also support projects designed to encourage more families, young people and visitors to spend time in the town centre and increase footfall for local shops, businesses and cultural venues.
Council officials say the investment could help create new workspaces for small businesses, start-ups, home-based workers and creative and professional services.
Property owners willing to redevelop empty or under-used buildings will also be encouraged to take part, alongside landlords seeking to invest in residential or visitor accommodation.
Dunoon ward councillor Daniel Hampsey said: “I am delighted that Dunoon will receive its share of the fund. This type of investment is something many local people, groups and Dunoons councillors have long campaigned for. Its really encouraging to see those efforts recognised.
Its now important that the council ensures every pound is invested wisely to maximise the benefit for our town, its businesses and residents. Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity so I look forward to playing whatever part I can in ensuring we maximise this opportunity of investment to ensure the best possible outcome.”
Businesses, landlords and property owners with potential projects are now being invited to express an interest in the scheme ahead of the first phase of investment.
The council has launched a Business Funding Enquiry Form for those interested in applying for support, with potential applicants also able to contact the authoritys economic development team to discuss proposals.
