A pool tournament held in memory of a popular Dunoon woman has once again proved a huge success, with around £4,000 expected to have been raised for local causes.
Mary’s Day returned on Saturday, bringing together dozens of players from across Scotland to honour the memory of Mary Stirling, who died from cancer in 2021 at the age of 32.
The annual event, organised by Mary’s father, Grant Stirling, saw around 64 competitors battle it out across venues including the Victoria Bar, Kirn, Hunters Quay Bowling Club and Sinbads Bar.
After a day of competition, Davie Hughes, from Greenock, emerged victorious, defeating Alan Scott, from Kirkcaldy, in the final at Sinbads Bar.
Home players also enjoyed a strong showing, with Scott Murray and Daniel Cunningham, both from Dunoon, reaching the semi-finals.
Although the final fundraising total has yet to be confirmed, organisers estimate that this year’s event has generated close to £4,000, continuing the impressive fundraising record established since Mary’s Day began five years ago.
As well as the tournament itself, competitors and supporters enjoyed a raffle featuring prizes donated by local businesses before raising a toast to Mary during the presentation ceremony.
The annual event was established by Grant following the loss of his daughter and has become a much-loved fixture in Dunoon’s calendar, bringing together family, friends and the wider community while raising thousands of pounds for local charities and causes.
